History of the Centre

  • April 1, 2011 – Sir John Franklin, Community Centre, River Heights Community Centre, and Crescentwood Community Centre amalgamate into one, incorporated as Central Corydon Community Centre.
  • Amalgamation project began in 2009, following the City of Winnipeg’s ‘Plan 2025’ initiative.
  • Amalgamation focused on three main initiatives:
    1. Improving program availability for children.
    2. Lessening the load on volunteers and coordinators.
    3. Redeveloping each site to meet the growing needs of the community.

History of the Naming

Project

  • Naming project began in June, 2011.
  • Team name was suggested by Michaela Briscoe during a contest put on by the Central Corydon Community Centre and posted to their website.

Logo and Heritage Crest

  • All new jerseys will display the Heritage Crest, sporting the logos of each of the three joined community centres —the Crescentwood Grizzlies, River Heights Cardinals, and Sir John Franklin Explorers — and will preserve the rich histories of each.
  • Grosvenor Avenue Ice Hockey Federation will be renamed to Corydon Heritage Ice Hockey Federation.
  • Teams in that league will continue to use the Grizzlies, Cardinals, Explorers, and Sabres names

Next Steps

  • With new a name and logo, we begin a new legacy for the Central Corydon Community Centre, founded on the same principles the original three centres were built on: collaboration, support, and unity.
  • New name and logo will begin appearing over next few weeks.
  • Over time, it will be applied to all team jerseys and community centre spaces.

  • River Heights Community Centre opened in 1946
  • Crescentwood Community Centre opened in 1945
  • Sir John Franklin Community Centre opened in 1940
