Meet Brooke Hess (she/her)
Growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Brooke has been immersed in the contemporary dance scene from a very young age. Her love for dance began while she was a member of a small dance troupe under the direction of Paula Blair. She felt the love, liveliness, and community brought together by contemporary dance due to her early upbringing surrounded by these Winnipeg companies. Through that she was heavily influenced and inspired to choose a career in dance. The desire to challenge myself and seek further education grew and she was introduced to the School of Contemporary Dancers, and began classes in their general program. Brooke graduated from The Senior Professional Program in May 2021. Her relationship with the School of Contemporary Dancers continues to thrive as she is part of the core faculty in the schools General Program. Brooke has had the pleasure to work professionally in choreographic works by Robin Poitras, Paula Blair, and Hillary James. She is an Artist in Residence at New Dance Horizons where she has performed both works by Robin Poitras and herself. Along with teaching and dancing, Brooke has taken interest in costume design and Stage Management.
Brooke has been teaching dance since the fall of 2017. Brooke began her studies as a dance teacher by assisting Robyn Thomson-Khacki in the General Program at The School of Contemporary Dancers. She has studied dance pedagogy with Faye Thompson(C.M.), and creative movement with Odette Heyn(C.M.), Paula Blair, and Sarah Roche. Brooke teaches in the General Program and Junior Program at The School of Contemporary Dancers, where she currently teaches jazz, contemporary, parents and tots, and creative movement. She has history teaching many different dance styles including ballet, jazz, and lyrical. She teaches in hopes to inspire her students to continue to grow in their passion of dance.
